Local vendors go to the Chiang Mai Gate, set up and sell everything from spicy meat and basil dish called pad kra pow to the dessert of fresh mango sticky rice with coconut milk sprinkled on top every night. Fear not if you have no idea about where to get your street grub on during the weekend. In Chiang Mai, you can find a market for every occasion. For eating and shopping lovers, the Sunday Walking Street is a must-visit place, however, if you are not one for crowds, make sure to go early! Rachadamnoen Road, where you can find vendors selling local handicrafts, handcrafted lamps, jewelry, clothes, dolls, soaps, Christmas ornaments and just about every other keepsake you have imagined, is the main market thoroughfare. Right after reaching the end of the first block of Rachadamnoen, you can find yourself flanked by two beautiful temples. Their courtyards are filled with stunning food stalls offering an awesome mix of samosas, fried bananas, pad Thai and dumplings, Japanese curry and sushi for 15 cents per piece. Leave yourself several hours to wander, shop, and eat at the market, which stretches the length of the road if you are really interested in doing any shopping at all. Go to Wualai Road on Saturday, you can explore a Walking Street, which is a slightly less crowded and slightly tamer version of the Sunday market. This walking street just behind the Chiang Mai Gate is a stunning place to pick up pillow covers, purses, hand-woven clothing, wallets as well as other items sold by ethic people local hill tribe communities.

Night Bazaar is such a stunning shopping spot for those who are prepared to do some haggling. You will want to be on your guard against getting ripped-off as the Night Bazaar attracts so many travelers. However, from clothes and scarves to housewares and carvings, you can find some great deals there. After having finished shopping, you should not miss a muay Thai boxing fight at the stadium on the premises. As a big part of local culture, Muay Thai fights can add a fascinating memory to your stay in Chiang Mai.
